Rickettsia helvetica in Dermacentor reticulatus Ticks

We report on the molecular evidence that Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in Croatia are infected with Rickettsia helvetica (10%) or Rickettsia slovaca (2%) or co-infected with both species (1%). These findings expand the knowledge of the geographic distribution of R. helvetica and D. reticulatus ticks.

Laboratory colonization stabilizes the naturally dynamic microbiome composition of field collected Dermacentor andersoni ticks

BACKGROUND Nearly a quarter of emerging infectious diseases identified in the last century are arthropod-borne. Although ticks and insects can carry pathogenic microorganisms, non-pathogenic microbes make up the majority of their microbial communities. The majority of tick microbiome research has had a focus on discovery and description; very few studies have analyzed the ecological context and...

Rickettsia slovaca in Dermacentor marginatus ticks, Germany

To the Editor: Dermacentor spp. ticks are found in many countries in Europe, and are vectors for several pathogens, including Francisella tularensis, Coxiella burnetii, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia canis (1,2). Because Dermacentor marginatus ticks require warm dry habitats, these ticks are found in only a few areas in southern Germany, mainly in the Rhine and Main valleys (3). However, these ti...

West-to-east differences of Babesia canis canis prevalence in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in Slovakia.

Babesia canis canis is the most frequent causative agent of canine babesiosis in Central Europe, frequently causing severe disease. Recently, many new endemic foci of this disease have been reported from European countries. Growing incidence of canine babesiosis was recorded also in Slovakia during the last decade, from first cases in eastern Slovakia ten years ago to recent cases all over the ...

Experimental transmission of Anaplasma marginale by male Dermacentor reticulatus

BACKGROUND Bovine anaplasmosis has been reported in several European countries, but the vector competency of tick species for Anaplasma marginale from these localities has not been determined. Because of the wide distributional range of Dermacentor reticulatus within Europe and the major role of Dermacentor spp. as a vector of A. marginale in the United States, we tested the vector competency o...
